An elderly man turned up alive nine years after his family believed he had been cremated after a car accident, reports say.

Zhuo Kangluo, who was found ‘dead’ by the roadside after fleeing a Chinese nursing home, is said to have turned up alive in a village.

Chongqing authorities first received reports of a man acting strangely in August, according to China News Network.

Initially, officers struggled to identify the man because of his refusal to answer questions, but a DNA test on Tuesday reportedly matched Zhuo Kangluo’s brother.

Nine years ago, a man who died in a car accident was misidentified as Zhuo by relatives and villagers.

The body was cremated after her nephew allegedly did not want an autopsy and DNA evidence was not available to immediate family members.

Zhuo’s grandson was also said to have recognized the man’s resemblance when looking at a missing persons poster.

Upon visiting him, the man reportedly burst into tears and was also able to spell the names of his relatives correctly.

Chinese authorities are now said to be working to identify the man mistakenly thought to be Zhuo in 2014.

Attention has been given to Zhuo following his reappearance.
